League Rules

Game Balls

There are no restrictions or regulations on the tennis balls. The only rule is the opposing team captain must check the game balls before the game and throw out any questionable balls.

Count

  • 5 balls = Walk
  • 2 strikes = Strikeout
  • Hit by pitch = 2 balls

Outs & Fouls

  • Foul tip = out (wherever the ball FIRST bounces determines fair/foul — anything behind the line is foul)
  • Foul off the body = out
  • There are no longer dead balls
  • Batting out of order = automatic out

Fielding

  • Any ground ball can be fielded for an out as long as the fielder has one foot inside or on the fielder line when they make the play. If they jump, they must land with one foot on or inside the line.
  • The catcher cannot field any ball that touches the ground.
  • If a ball hits off a fielder's glove or body in the air and hits the fence, it is a triple. If it goes over the fence, it is a home run.
  • Any ball hit off a fielder (or bobbled) or his glove that is caught in the air by another fielder is an out. You can't knock the ball out of the air with your glove — that does not count as an out.

Hits

ResultHow It Happens
Home RunOver the fence, OR any ball that hits any part of the tree (regardless of where it lands)
TripleHits any part of the fence or backstop
DoubleGround rule doubles only — a ball that bounces over on 1 hop
SingleAnything else hit in play that isn't an out

Catcher

  • Calls balls and strikes
  • Calls foul and fair
  • Has final say on all calls
  • Cannot field any ball once it touches the ground
  • Catch a ball that is swung through = out
  • Catch a foul tip or foul behind the line = double play (the LEAD RUNNER is out and taken off base)

Games

  • 6-inning games. If tied after 6, one extra inning is played. After that, the game is a tie.
  • After 4 full innings, the game is official.
  • 10-run rule in effect after 4 full innings (3 innings if games are 5 innings).
  • Teams can forfeit a game at any time.
  • No max for innings pitched.
  • Games start at 5:30. If you have at least 3 guys there, get started — no more waiting around.
  • You may play with 2 guys if necessary — you take an automatic out for the missing third spot when it comes up in the lineup.

Standings & Tiebreakers

  • Rainouts: If there is a rainout any week, those games are NOT made up. All games that week go in as a tie for each team.
  • Tiebreaker order:
    1. Total wins
    2. Head-to-head record
    3. Play-in game (only if tied for a playoff spot). If just for seeding, the third tiebreaker is run differential.

Rules are subject to change.
